How to Most Effectively Keep Flies, Wasps, Gnats and Other Pests Away from Your Picnic This Summer
by www.SixWise.com

You've been eagerly awaiting the first warm summer day to pull out your picnic basket, pack it full of cool summer treats, and head out to your favorite grassy park for an early summer picnic. And so have they.

bright colors attract bees

Resist the urge to wear bright colors to your picnic ... you'll attract bees that mistake the colors for flowers.

Flies, mosquitoes, ants, ticks and wasps are just a sampling of the uninvited visitors that can show up at your picnic. Aside from being a nuisance, these pests can spread diseases to you and your pets, like:

  • West Nile Virus (mosquitoes)

  • Lyme Disease (ticks)

  • ysentery and Tuberculosis (houseflies)

  • Anaplasmosis (ticks)

  • Typhus (fleas)

  • Allergic Reactions (bees and wasps)

Fortunately, there are a number of safe ways to keep pests away from your summer picnic so you can enjoy nature (without having to let it crawl through your potato salad).

How to Keep Pests Away From Your Picnic

Anytime you are outdoors you may be tempted to spray insect repellants on yourself, your family and your outdoor area. However, pesticides can be extremely hazardous, as can DEET, the active ingredient in most insect repellants.

protect you from bug bites

Wearing long sleeves and pants (in light-colored, light fabrics, for summer) will help protect you from bug bites.

In fact, studies conducted at Duke University have found that using DEET frequently or for extended periods may damage your brain cells, resulting in:

  • Memory loss

  • Headache

  • Weakness and fatigue

  • Muscle and joint pain

  • Tremors

  • Shortness of breath

However, you can keep pests away safely by using a DEET-free and pesticide-free natural insect repellant, such as the highly recommended Flea 'n Tick B Gone. This completely natural and highly effective insect repellant is an ideal alternative because it's an enzyme-based formula made naturally from plant resources.

It is truly safe enough to spray directly onto your pets (including your horse!), plus, you can use it as an entirely non-toxic insect repellant for your backyard or picnic area. Just mist the area and you're tick- and bug-free for at least three hours!

Meanwhile, the following tips will also help to keep your picnic pest-free:

  • Avoid picnicking at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Wear long sleeves and pants to avoid bug bites.

  • Choose a dry, sunny, well-kept area. (Ticks like shaded, moist areas, and mosquitoes love water. Overgrown places can harbor fleas, ticks and more.)

  • Don't bring out your food until you're ready to eat. Open food will attract a variety of insects (not to mention runs the risk of spoiling).

  • Cover up high-sugar foods and drinks (like sodas). Bees are especially attracted to them.

  • Wear light-colored clothing. Bees are less attracted to light colors, and you'll be able to spot ticks more easily.

  • Don't use brightly colored tablecloths or utensils (they'll attract bees that mistake them for flowers).

  • Avoid wearing scented body lotion, deodorant or other personal care products (they'll attract insects, such as bees).

  • When you're ready to serve your food, set it up on a table away from where people will be sitting. Then cover it up and dispose of any garbage right away.
