Eliminate the Cause, No Need for a Cure
and Why Your Birth-DNA is NOT Your Destiny… If You So Choose



On a day-by-day, and even hourly, basis, the choices you make are influencing your health. Whether you choose to …

Your actions, or lack of actions, are often the primary determinate of if or when a disease is expressed in your body and if it is allowed to grow or instead goes into remission “once expressed.”

There’s always hope and opportunity to improve your health by identifying and eliminating the cause of illness … even when a disease is present in your DNA.

Your choices either strengthen, maintain and even improve your good healthy DNA genetic expression … or can otherwise degenerate, weaken, and allow diseases to flourish -- “in effect” causing diseases, poor health conditions, and yes even death… or even worse prolong agonizing painful poor health.

Regular relaxation is just one way to help you eliminate the cause of disease.

Epigenetics, which means “changes in gene function that do not involve changes in DNA sequence,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, offers incredible empowerment for all of us, including those who feel we’re destined to repeat a family history of a certain illness.

In other words, your birth-DNA is not your destiny. It’s been found that the addition of a methyl group – one carbon atom attached to three hydrogen atoms – to a specific spot on a gene can change that gene’s expression, and, as TIME magazine reported, essentially turn it on or off.

Often the process, known as DNA methylation, makes the gene’s expression either pro-health or pro-disease, and it’s a process you have a say in.

"We have a choice to bathe our genes with joy, happiness, exercise, and nutritious foods, or we can bathe them with anger, lack of hope, junk food and sedentary lifestyle," David Rakel, MD, director of integrative medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, said in a UW Health article.

"This area of research holds so much potential and gives us the hope to say 'Even if my genes indicate a history of family illness, I can make positive lifestyle choices that can keep a gene from being expressed as a disease,'" he says.

Eliminate the Cause, No Need for a Cure

Your everyday choices are what guide the expression of your genetic code, and explain why identical twins, who have the same DNA, often end up with different health complaints later in life. Something caused their genes to express differently, and that “something” is often lifestyle and environmentally related.

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states, “Four modifiable health risk behaviors—lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption—are responsible for much of the illness, suffering, and early death related to chronic diseases.”

When you eliminate these “causes,” you therefore often eliminate a need for a cure … a very good thing, especially when you consider the “cure” is often drugs and surgery.

Relying on drugs to cure your health problems often results in even more problems, and their use has actually been listed as a “substantial cause of preventable illness” in the over 65 crowd because of the high prevalence of adverse drug reactions in this group.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, researchers state that Americans over 65 experience 180,000 life-threatening or fatal adverse drug effects each year, over half of which may be preventable. They also note that a study found 6.5 percent of all hospitalizations in the general population are due to adverse drug reactions, and this percentage is likely even higher in those over 65.

They continue to state that new symptoms in the elderly should always be considered as potential drug side effects … and often people’s health can markedly improve -- i.e. they can experience a “total cure” -- just by discontinuing their prescription drugs!

“Once recognized, a side effect of a drug is probably the single most reversible affliction in all of geriatric medicine … discovering that a symptom is caused by a drug presents an uncommon opportunity to effect a total “cure” by stopping the offending prescription or lowering the dose.

In our own practices we have often seen patients on a seemingly inexorable trajectory towards institutional care whose functional capacity was restored by thoughtful reassessment of their drug regimens. This has led to the useful if overstated recommendation that “any new symptom in an older patient should be considered a possible drug side effect until proved otherwise,”” researchers stated.

Fortunately, as you make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, not only will your genetic expression be optimized, but your need for prescription drugs will typically decline as well.

Lifestyle Tips for “Eliminating the Cause” of Many if Not Most Diseases
